Jammu and Kashmir police claimed on Monday to have scuttled a plan of the Lashker-e-Tayiba to attack Amarnath pilgrims following the killing of two hardcore Pakistani terrorists in the state.
The two Pakistan-based terrorists of the LeT were killed in an encounter with police at village Nagabal-Derand in Ganderbal district on Sunday night, foiling a plan of the outfit to attack the pilgrims on their return from the cave shrine, a police spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the encounter took place after police cordoned off the village along the Srinagar-Leh national highway following intelligence inputs that LeT terrorists were planning to attack a yatra convoy bound for Srinagar from the Baltal base camp.
The slain ultras were identified as Syed Abid Ahmad alias Akasha of Narwal-Punjab and Sageer Shah alias Garian of Iptabad Subah Sarah in Pakistan.
Two AK rifles, 10 magazines, 96 rounds of ammunition and two grenades were recovered from the slain militants, who were wanted in a large number of civilian killings in the district, the spokesman said.
In another incident, a self-styled battalion commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen was killed in a joint operation by police and Rashtriya Rifles at Waddarbala in Kupwara district on Sunday night, the spokesperson said.
The slain terrorist was identified as Abdul Ahad Alias Haroon. An AK rifle, three magazines, 15 rounds of ammunition and two grenades were recovered from Haroon.
