The Bangladesh authority handed over four Indian convicts including three militants from the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and one truck driver-cum-smuggler P Chouhan to Indian authority at a Border Security Force (BSF) outpost near Dalu about 48 kilometers from Tura in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
A senior police officer from Bangladesh accompanied by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) officials handed over the convicts who had served their terms in different Bangladesh jails, to a team of officials from Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya Police and Assam Police. The deported persons were later taken to Assam by the team of Assam Police personnel as all the four were from the state.
Officials from various intelligence wings of quizzed the four deported persons for about one hour immediately after their hand-over that took place at around 11-30 a.m.
The three NDFB militants who were deported from Bangladesh included M Khorang, M Daphung and Sanjoy Das. The civilian was a former smuggler and truck driver, P Chouhan. The NDFB ultras were arrested few years back by Bangladesh authorities after they had sneaked into the neighbouring country to under go training in the militants' base there.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) earlier provided a list of 12 Indian, including the general secretary of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), Anup Chetia , to the BSF informing that they would soon be handed over to Indian authority.
The BSF now hopes that the ULFA general secretary who has been lodged in Bangladesh jail since his arrest in Dhaka in 1997 on charges of illegal entry into the country with two forged Bangladeshi passports, for possessing an unauthorized satellite phone and illegal currencies of various countries. Chetia has completed his jail term in Bangladesh prompting the Indian authority to request for his early deportation.
