Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon met US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, William Burns on Monday to discuss the crucial Indo-US nuclear deal, whose fate currently rests with the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group.
With the nuclear cartel deciding to meet early in September to consider a waiver for India to carry out nuclear commerce, the civilian nuclear deal and the ongoing dialogue with the NSG will merit a lot of attention at the Menon-Burns talks, highly placed sources told PTI.
Menon, who is on a private visit to the US, arrived in Washington from New York this morning and is expected hold detailed discussions with Burns and other senior officials, with the session also likely to include a working lunch.
The officials will discuss apprehensions and suggestions of some NSG members that led to its Aug 21-22 meeting ending inconclusively.
