A local court in Sawai Madhopur has convicted five Gujjar activists and awarded them four years imprisonment for indulging in arson and damaging public property during the Gujjar agitation for ST status last year.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fast Track) Seema Jain convicted and awarded sentences to Hukum Chand Nath (Malarna), Shankar Lal, Surma Gurjar (both Masudanpura) and Ghamandi Gurjar and Ram Sahai Gurjar for damaging property at the Patwar headquarters and committing arson.

The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 500 on each of the accused.

However, the court exonerated nine others for lack of evidence.

This was the first case in connection with the Gujjar agitation related violence decided by a court in the state.
