The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday ordered a judicial probe into the Greater Noida police firing on farmers, which claimed four lives, and increased the compensation of those killed in the incident.

"The decision of judicial probe has been taken on the directives of Chief Minister Mayawati," said Principal Secretary (Information) Vijay Shankar Pandey.

The probe will be conducted by a retired high court judge.

He said the compensation of those killed in the firing has been increased to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 3 lakh announced earlier.

Pandey said a total of 15 farmers and 35 police men were injured in the incident and 19 persons were arrested by the police.

Pandey said four persons were killed in the firing and there was no policeman in the list of the deceased.

The government also announced Rs 15,000 to Rs one lakh as compensation for the injured victims.

When asked about the compensation for the farmers' land acquired by the government, Pandey said it was fixed only after an agreement with the farmers in 2006.
