Unseasonal rains coupled with lightning and thunderstorms in some parts of the country have claimed 13 lives even as the dip in mercury levels brought back the chill in the air.

Twelve people were killed and several got burn injuries in lightning and thunderstorm incidents in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and Jaunpur districts since Thursday, police said.

A boy died and three others were injured in a lightning strike in Sanand village in Gujarat's Ahmedabad district as unseasonal rains disrupted normal life in north and central parts of the state.

Rain also stopped play in the second cricket Test between India and South Africa at Ahmedabad's Motera ground.

The second day's play was called off early with 12.4 overs still remaining to be bowled, much to the relief of the Indian team, which has been up against it to save the match.

In Delhi, sunny weather gave way to an overcast sky at around 4 pm resulting in thundershowers and dust storms in several parts.

The rains brought down daytime temperature by 6.5 degree Celsius in Delhi. The change in weather and drop in temperature were due to a low pressure area over nearby Rajasthan, Met officials said.

There were also intermittent rains and dust storms in Rajasthan, bringing back the chill in the air.

Meanwhile, a three-member Central team on Friday arrived in Kochi to assess the damages caused by unseasonal summer rains that had lashed Kerala for 10 days.
