Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will go on a fast in Chennai on Monday demanding the early completion of the Sethusamudram canal project, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam sources said.
A decision in this regard was taken after Karunanidhi consulted other leaders of the Democratic Progressive Alliance following a Supreme Court order staying the bandh called by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Democratic Progressive Alliance on Monday or any other day on the Sethusamudram issue.
The fast will be observed in front of his legislative office in Chepauk from 8 am to 6 pm, the sources said, adding other leaders of the alliance would also join it.
After three hours of arguments on a petition filed by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice B N Aggarwal stayed the bandh.
The court had especially met on Sunday, a rare occurrence, to dispose of the AIADMK's petition.
The AIADMK filed the special leave petition, after the Madras high court on Saturday declined to interfere with the party's plea for restraining the ruling combine from going ahead with the bandh call.
The AIADMK in the SLP had contended that the proposed bandh was unconstitutional and in violation of the apex court's directive on the issue.
