Anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops and special operations group (SOG) of state police late Saturday afternoon surrounded a village mosque where two militants are holed up.

"Intermittent firing exchanges between the two holed-up militants and the surrounding troops of 53 RR and SOG started on Saturday evening. The militants entered the mosque during a search operation at Tujan village in Pulwama district," a senior police officer said.

He said the two entered the village after a brief exchange of fire. Security forces have installed floodlights in the area around the mosque to ensure that the  two militants do not escape in the dark.

The holed-up militants have so far ignored appeals to surrender. Sources said  intermittent firing exchanges were continuing in the area.
