Raising the banner of revolt against party chief Rajnath Singh, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajnath Singh Surya on Thursday demanded his resignation for allegedly promoting nepotism in the party and held him responsible for the erosion in the party's strength.

"By getting his son appointed an office bearer in the state party unit, Rajnath Singh has deeply hurt the sentiments of the party workers and has lost the moral right to lead the party," Surya said in Lucknow on Thursday.

"Rajnath Singh has proved that he does not deserve to be on the post he currently occupies," he said, adding "perhaps he wants to equal Congress President Sonia Gandhi in this respect".

Surya accused Singh of procuring the post of party president by doing Ganesh parikrama and said he (Singh) had failed to understand the feelings of BJP workers.

He also accused Singh of initiating nepotism at a national level in the BJP after becoming the president of the party.  Surya added that Rajnath Singh was, "the junior most in the party's hierarchy. The BJP's fortune would continue to decline if the leadership remained in such hands,"
