A defence spokesman said alert troops of the 9 JAK Rifles noticed suspicious movement in the Machil sector of Kupwara.

"The infiltrators were surrounded and challenged, upon which they indiscriminately fired, resulting in a heavy exchange of fire between the troops and the militants. All the three intruders were gunned down and four AK-47 rifles, one pistol and large quantity of ammunition were recovered."
