The Assam government on Friday suspended the officer in-charge of the Nalbari police station in connection with the killing of a 60-year-old mother of an United Liberation Front of Asom militant by a police-Central Reserve Police Force raid party at her residence on September 8.
The unfortunate killing of Sabitri Rajbongshi, mother of ULFA militant Bhaskar Rajbongshi, sparked widespread protest in the state forcing the government to take action to pacify the raging public anger.
Health Minister Dr Himnanta Bishwa Sharma informed that the state government was in principle opposed to any harassment to innocent kin of any ULFA militant.
"It is a stated policy of our government not to harass any family members of ULFA militants. It will not be tolerated," he said, adding that officer Nalbari police station Keshab Phukon had been suspended in connection with death of Sabitri Rajbongshi. Assam government also announced Rs 3 lakh compensation to her family.
Meanwhile, a case under Section 302/34 of the Indian IPC had been registered in Nalbari police station even as police arrested two surrendered ULFA militants, Mrinal Goswami and Sanjay Das, who accompanied the police raid party to Sabitri Rajbongshi's residence.
The two surrendered ULFA militants were accompanying the police-CRPF search party in the capacity of informers (special police officers).
Following the public outcry against the unfortunate death of the old lady, the Assam government had announced a commissioner-level enquiry top be conducted by the Lower Assam divisional commissioner. The report of the enquiry will be submitted within September 25.
