The historic agreement on civilian nuclear co-operation is an important part of the India-United States relationship, which will provide India access to technology while helping it achieve its economic and environmental objectives, a top US government official said.

"The US remains committed to this agreement," secretary to the US Treasury Henry M Paulson said at the US-India CEO Forum, being held on Monday.

Both the countries share the challenge of ensuring secured and clean energy supply, he said.

"We understand that economic growth and environmental responsibility are necessary. Moving forward with the civilian nuclear agreement is one part of the solution. Working together in the post-2012 framework through the UN Climate Change process is another," Paulson said.

"And if we are to be successful in meeting our energy and environmental challenges, it must be against the backdrop of a strong economy," he said.

Through President Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's leadership, political, economic and cultural ties between the US and India have become stronger. These ties enjoy bi-partisan support in both countries, he said.

"In the last few years, we have launched important initiatives in areas, including counter-terrorism co-operation, space research, clean energy, agriculture, education and economic development," Paulson added.
