1 killed in Nandigram violence

One person was killed and another injured in an exchange of fire and bombs between the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee members and the Communist Party of India-Marxist activists in this troubled block in east Midnapore district.

The two groups resorted to firing and hurled bombs from Satenganbari village and Takapura in Nandigram and from the adjacent CPI-M stronghold of Khejuri since Friday night, Superintendent of Police G A Srinivas said.

While Karim Kazi was killed at Satengabari village, another man Aritosh Jana was injured, he said.

BUPC claimed both were its members.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Raj Kanojia said in Kolkata that the violence continued till the afternoon.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had rushed to Nandigram, party sources said adding, a bandh has been called there for Sunday.
