Alleging large-scale corruption in relief and rehabilitation work of dam oustees in the state, the Narmada Bachao Andolan on Wednesday demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

Leading a rally in Bhopal, NBA leader Medha Patkar said corruption amounting to crores of rupees in rehabilitation work was taking place, and a CBI probe should be immediately launched before documents were manipulated to save the culprits.

"A lobby of top officials, some local advocates and many others working as intermediaries, are involved in looting the state exchequer, as well as cheating the project affected persons, while siphoning a large chunk of money to be spent on rehabilitation," she alleged.

Corruption at this large scale could not occur without the support of politicians and their names were even taken in informal chats amongst people, she alleged.

Citing examples of alleged corruption, she claimed that families affected from Sardar Sarovar and Indira Sagar project had been forced or lured by officials to prepare fake registries to avail benefits of the state government's special rehabilitation package (SRP).

"The procedure drafted was such that without flawed documents and without fake purchases of land, SRP could not be drawn in the name of project-affected persons," she alleged.

Fake registries were even made by intermediaries, who were guided by land acquisition and rehabilitation officers, revenue employees and those employed at the registrar's office, Patkar charged.
