Musharraf wins Pak prez poll: report

Unofficial results on Saturday said Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has won the presidential poll, state television reported.

Musharraf got 252 out of 257 votes cast in Parliament, CEC Qazi M Farooq said.

Security was tightened in Islamabad and the four provincial capitals of Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and Lahore.

Large numbers of policemen were deployed outside the assembly buildings.

In Islamabad, the police put up concrete barricades around Parliament House and checked all persons entering the building.

Polling started at 10 am and continued till 3 pm at the national and provincial assemblies.

Each member of the Senate and National Assembly had one vote while every provincial assembly had votes equal to its strength.

There are 342 members in the National Assembly, 100 in the Senate and 728 in the provincial assemblies. A total of 87 lawmakers of the National Assembly and more than 100 provincial assembly members resigned ahead of the poll.
