Assam: ULFA militant lynched, 2 hurt

An United Liberation Front of Asom militant was beaten to death and two others were critically injured by a mob on Monday when the trio had allegedly come to extort money from an official of the district Agriculture Marketing Board in Assam's Golaghat district.

Official sources said that a three-member group of ULFA militants came to the house of the board's Vice-President Pranab Chakraborty at Number 1. Joraguri village under Dergaon police station of the district to collect Rs 5 lakh, which they had allegedly demanded earlier from him.

As they were neogiating the deal, they took out a pistol and tried to kill Chakraborty who shouted and grabbed the assailant.

Immediately a huge crowd gathered who nabbed the assailants and began beating them up.

The trio were seriously injured and one of the militants, identified as Sergeant Major Manoranjan Doley alias Mangal Singh, died at the hospital.

The injured duo have been identified as Ganesh Pegu and Monikanta Chara and the police have recovered a pistol, some live ammunition and documents from their possession.
