The indefinite curfew clamped in the Rangapara area of Assam's Sonitpur district would be relaxed for two hours on Thursday even as the situation remained tense with adivasis slated to launch a protest march to the district headquarters in Tezpur.

Sonitpur deputy commissioner of police, Kamal Goswami, said curfew would be relaxed from 2 pm to 4 pm as there had been no untoward incident since Wednesday night. He, however, said the adivasis would not be allowed to enter the district headquarters town of Tezpur.

The police and paramilitary personnel have been posted at several places, including entry routes to the city, to prevent the protestors from entering the area, Goswami said.

Rangapara and nearby areas were rocked by violence on Wednesday when the adivasis, protesting the assault on them in Guwahati on November 24, attacked people and business establishments, forcing the local people to retaliate.

The agitators also attempted to attack the Rangapara police station. The police resorted to blank fire and used tear gas to control the mob. There were no reports of any fresh violence from any part of the state on Thursday.
