The Assam government on Sunday made over 150 agitating junior doctors in Guwahati Medical College Hospital pay a heavy price for failing to turn up for duty during the emergency situation in which hundreds of Adivasi people injured in Saturday's mob violence in Guwahati were in the hospital by terminating their jobs.
Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Bishwa Sharma told the media that the health authority had decided to terminate the jobs of 150 junior doctors "on charges of blackmailing the government and putting lives of patients in danger" and arrested over 100 agitating junior doctors.
The junior doctors were on strike since Friday night to press for their demands for adequate security in the GMCH campus and the introduction of reverse referral system. The agitating doctors didn't even care to attend to hundreds of injured Adivasi people who were admitted to the hospital on Saturday afternoon.
Police also took into custody over 100 agitating junior doctors who had gathered at the GMCH campus on Sunday to have a meeting with the health minister.
The health minister informed that state government would immediately appoint over 100 junior doctors to tide over the emergency situation in the medical college hospital.
He said a large number of doctors would be pooled in for different hospitals to the GMCH to take care of hundreds of patients undergoing treatment in the hospital.
