Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari arrived on his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.
Ansari, accompanied by wife Salma Ansari, was received at the Srinagar airport by Governor Lieutenant General (Retired) S K Sinha, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior ministers of the state cabinet and senior civil and military officials.
At the airport, a guard of honour was also presented to the vice president.
Ansari, who is on a two-day visit to the state, is scheduled to attend the fourth convocation of the the Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agriculture and Technology on Sunday.
Ansari visited the famous Nishat Garden on the banks of the Dal Lake on Saturday. He also paid obeisance at the Hazrtabal shrine which houses the relic of the Holy Prophet of Islam.
The chief minister briefed the visiting dignitary about the ongoing expansion and development work at the shrine. Ansari evinced a keen interest in the beautification programme of the revered shrine.
The vice president also enjoyed a tour of the Dal lake on a motorboat.
