The Assam government will constitute a committee of legal experts to guide the government to take action against those who have been indicted by the Justice K N Saikia Commission for carrying out secret killings in Assam in 1998-2001.
The Saikia Commission report tabled in Assam Assembly on Thursday indicted Mahanta, who was the chief minister then.
"We have to take action on findings of the Saikia Commission report as the report strongly spoke about connivance of then state government, police officers and surrendered ULFA cadres in carrying out secret killings," Gogoi said.
About the Inquiry Commission's recommendation for gradual dismantling of the counter-insurgency unified command structure in the state, Gogoi said the review committee would examine the proposal.
He, however, said his government preferred withdrawal of the command when the situation in the state would be restored to normalcy. But, now he said, the situation was not conducive.
Dismissing allegations levelled by Mahanta he said the inquiry commission report was not politically motivated.
"Mahanta is already half dead politically as he is heading a party that has only one member in the Assembly. Anyway, he is free to challenge the Saikia Commission report in the court of law, if he wishes so," Gogoi said.
