Dr K Murugesan and his wife Dr Gandhimathy, who hit the headlines six months back for allowing their 14-year-old son to perform a surgery on a woman at their hospital at Manaparai in Tiruchirapalli district, have been barred from practising for a year.
The Indian Medical Association's Tamil Nadu unit, which met in Chennai on Wednesday, took a unanimous decision, its president Dr G Prakasam told PTI.
He said the committee summoned the doctor couple and interrogated them.
The decision was taken on the basis of the findings of a three-member committee, headed by the district collector, which went into the incident, and the statements given by the doctor couple, private doctors and Tiruchirapalli district unit of the association, he said.
The doctor couple's son, Dhileepan Raj, a tenth standard student, performed a caesarean operation on a 20-year old woman in May last under the supervision of his parents. The doctor couple was arrested in June following public protests, but was later released on bail.
The incident had shocked the medical fraternity in the state and the Indian Medical Association also had taken up the issue.
