A unique festival

May 7, 2007
The sun was about to set and we were on our way to Koovagam. It would be no exaggeration to say all the people in the nearby villages were heading towards Koovagam. The narrow road could not handle the umpteen special buses provided by the state government and the innumerable vans, not to forget the two-wheelers and cycles.

All the vehicles were overflowing with people and the buses looked dangerously close to toppling over with the weight. There were fancy cars too bringing Aravanis to the temple.

But it was only when the bumper-to-bumper traffic reached near the temple that one realised the magnitude of the festival.

The sugarcane fields that were empty after the harvest served as fair grounds and parking space. It was 7 in the evening and the multitude we saw was only the tip of the iceberg, those who had come earlier to the festival said.
