A woman member of the anti-land acquisition front was severely beaten up on Friday, allegedly by some political activists, sparking fresh tension in troubled Nandigram.

The activist of Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee was attacked by supporters of a political party when she went to buy kerosene at Tekhali market, East Midnapore Superintendent of Police G Srinivas said.

She was admitted to Nandigram block health centre for treatment.

A BUPC member alleged that the woman was attacked by CPI-M activists for her active role in the land acquisition resistance agitation.

The incident sparked off fresh tension in the area with BUPC planning retaliatory action.

Srinivas said police was keeping a close watch on the situation.

Nandigram had witnessed violent clashes between BUPC members and security forces in which 14 people were killed and scores injured on March 14.

BUPC had been resisting land acquisition in the area by the state government for setting up a chemical hub and a SEZ.
