An emotional Rekha, wife of slain Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan, broke down in court on Thursday while narrating the sequence of events on April 22, 2006, when her husband was allegedly shot by his brother Pravin.

"I went to the bedroom to get Pramod's clothes, heard a sound," she said describing the chain of events just before breaking down into tears on the witness stand.

She was then helped onto a chair.

Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam sought to adjourn the hearing till Friday considering her condition.

His request was granted by the court, which will now continue recording the statement of Rekha Mahajan on Friday.

Pravin is accused of shooting his elder brother Pramod multiple times with his licenced revolver, leading to his death on May 3, 2006.

The court also examined another witness who had seen some clothes, which were recovered from the scene of the crime, being handed over to the police.

Rekha was accompanied to a courtroom packed with reporters by BJP leader Gopinath Munde's wife, his daughters, state BJP leader Vinod Tawde and her brother-in-law Prakash Mahajan.

The trial in the case began on Wednesday with the court recording the statement of two prosecution witnesses.

Up to 58 witneses will be examined by the prosecution, but the number may be curtailed, Nikam had indicated earlier.

The next eyewitness to be examined will be the domestic help at Mahajan's residence who was present at the time of the shooting. Pravin has pleaded not guilty to the charges of trespass and murder.
