Three fundamentalists were on Thursday awarded life terms by a designated TADA court for their role in the August 1993 bomb blast at the RSS headquarters in Chennai, which claimed 11 lives.

Eight others were given sentences ranging from three years to five years, while four of the accused inlcuding banned Al Umma founder S A Basha were acquitted by designated judge T Ramaswami.

Three accused -- Kaja Nizamuddin, Hyder Ali, and Siddique -- were given life terms as according to the prosecution Nizamuddin and Imam Ali, now deceased, had planted the bomb in the RSS office while Hyder Ali and Siddique stood guard outside.

They were convicted under various sections of TADA and IPC.

In the case of the others, the judge said the period of jail term already undegone by them would be set off against their sentence.
