An alleged aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and the key accused in the landing of RDX and arms in 1993 has been acquitted in an Arms Act case by a court in Gujarat's Porbandar district.
Chief Judicial Magistrate G H Vaghela on Monday acquitted Umarmiyan Bukhari alias Mamumiyan, who was accused of giving two pistols to his relative Khalid Gaffar on March 19, 1994.
These pistols were allegedly part of a huge quantity of RDX and arms that was landed on the Gosabara coast of Porbandar in 1993 and used in the serial blasts in Mumbai later the same year.
"Mamumiyan has been acquitted as there was no strong evidence against him," claimed his advocate Salim Jhokiya.
"Apart from the confessional statement of Khalid Gaffar (who claimed to police that Mamumiyan had handed the pistols to him), no arms were found in Mamumiyan's possession," he said.
In spite of his acquital, Mamumiyan will continue to remain in judicial custody as there are two Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act cases (including the RDX and arms landing case) and a case of attempted murder pending against him in Porbandar.
Mamumiyan, believed to be a close aide of Dawood Ibrahim, was taken into custody by police in Porbandar in January 2005.
He was deported to India from Dubai in December 2004.
