Authorities on Wednesday sounded an alert in the Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu as the river was flooded following release of water from Krishnarajasagar and Kabini dams in Karnataka.

According to PWD officials, 115,000 cusecs of water had been released from the upstream dams following heavy rains and the water started reaching Mettur dam.

An alert has been sounded and all precautionary measures have been taken, they said.

The increased inflow comes ahead of the opening of shutters of the Mettur dam for release of water for 'Samba' crop.

The Mettur dam received an inflow of 75,377 cusecs at 12 pm, as the water level in the reservoir rose to 107.97 feet against the maximum of 120 feet, officials said.

The dam is being monitored round-the-clock, they said, adding that the inflow of water was being checked on an hourly basis.

Superintending Engineer G Subramanian is camping at the dam site, they said.

District Collector N Mathivanan said the Mettur dam would be opened at 6 pm on Wednesday to supply water for the Samba cultivation.
