With reports of fresh violence pouring in, the district administration on Tuesday decided not to relax curfew in the trouble-hit town even as traditional Moharram procession would not be taken out in the city keeping in view the tense situation.

The authorities had earlier decided to relax the curfew for three hours from noon to allow symbolic Tazia processions but it was withdrawn after fresh violence was reported in some parts of the city, police said.

People held demonstration at Rustanpur Dhala area and indulged in stone pelting prompting withdrawal of the relaxation, they said.

The traditional Moharram procession would not be taken out in the city in view of the prevailing tension, district police chief S K Bhagat told reporters in Gorakhpur after a meeting with Muslim Ulemas on Tuesday morning.

It has been agreed that only a symbolic procession will be taken out, he said adding the religious leaders has also "realised that the situation is not normal."

Protesters on Monday indulged in rampant violence torching several vehicles and attempting to set a train on fire prompting clamping of curfew in some areas in Gorakhpur as tension gripped parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh after a local BJP MP's arrest.

Local member of Parliament Yogi Adityanath was arrested on Sunday night.
