Nine persons, including four Army men and two Border Security Force jawans, were arrested by Railway police on Thursday after they allegedly beat up passengers, threw out their luggage and misbehaved with women travellers in the general compartment of the Guwahati-bound North East express from New Delhi, Railway police sources said.
Confirming the incident, Ajay Verma, DIG of Railway police (Bihar), told PTI that a group of armymen and BSF jawans travelling in the general coach of the train, allegedly in an inebriated state, ordered the passengers, who boarded the train at Mughalarsai railway station late Wednesday night, to get down claiming that the bogie was reserved.
But the passengers soon understood that they were 'lying' and resisted them, Verma said, adding that when the train left the station, the men in uniform beat up the passengers who had defied them till the train stopped at Dhina railway station.
The luggage of the passengers were thrown out while some women travellers were misbehaved with, he informed, adding that an alert Railway Protection Security Force official, sent a message to the control at Buxar railway station in Bihar about the incident.
As the train reached Buxar, the GRP men caught nine persons -- four army men, two BSF jawans and three civilians, who were identified by the agitated passengers and brought to the GRP station there, the DIG said, adding that a case had been registered following complaints from the passengers.
When contacted, Chief Public Relations Officer A K Chandra said the Railway police would hand over the army men to their controlling office for initiating proceedings, while the BSF jawans and the civilians would face legal proceedings as per law.
This is the third incident of this type, which occurred in Bihar during the past three months.
