Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan on Saturday demanded that the Centre should initiate quick action to restore a feeling of safety and security among people in Assam, and prevent recurrence of United Liberation Front of Asom violence.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said that effective steps should be taken to stop exodus of non-Assamese people and said that army should be deployed in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Golaghat and Dhemaji till the situation returned to normal.
Paswan, who undertook a visit to the worst-hit areas of Upper Assam, said the state government has not started relief work in many camps. He suggested that relief work should be speeded up.
He also demanded that a family member of the deceased should be given a government job or some other arrangement should be made for their livelihood.
Paswan said an atmosphere of fear prevailed among the people and added that a majority of the 70 migrant labourers killed belonged to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The chemical and fertiliser minister said production activities in the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation in Namrup were suspended since January 6 as many non-Assamese workers have gone back to their native places.
