National Democratic Alliance convener George Fernandes Tuesday claimed that a Swedish police officer in charge of the Bofors probe has written to him that he was willing to share information with the Central Bureau of Investigation in the matter, but the agency has not contacted him even once in the last 20 years.
Fernandes, in a statement, said senior police officer Sten Lindstrom had in a note to him said all the documents regarding the case were with him at his office even today. "He says he is willing to share them with the investigating agency in India. He confirms that no one from the CBI has contacted him for information or discussion in the past 20 years," he said.
Fernandes said after Bofors scam accused Ottavio Quattrocchi's detention in Argentina, Lindstrom's office spoke with the liaison officer of Interpol in Sweden to initiate their own inquiry.
He said the United Progressive Alliance should not think it can manage to make this matter "disappear as it is an international issue in which all persons are not malleable". Fernandes said the CBI must show its sincerity in pursuing the case by immediately inviting Lindstrom to India with all documents and evidence in his possession.
The NDA convener also asked why CBI has been searching for Quattrocchi in vain all over the world when his son, in partnership with him, regularly does business in India and was here for most of February.
Attacking UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi over the issue, he asked, "Will Sonia Gandhi and her family tell us whether they had any contact with Quattrocchi Jr during his stay in India?"
