Two Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants and two army jawans were killed in an encounter in the general area of Thanamandi in Rajouri on Friday morning.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Farooq Khan told UNI that army personnel of 43 Rashtriya Rifles along with state police, acting on a tip-off, cordoned off Raina Mohalla of Thanamandi for search operations.
During the search operation, militants opened fire on them, resulting in the death of a jawan. The army personnel retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, two LeT militants were shot dead and another jawan, Anand Kumar, was killed.
The slain militants have been identified as Abu Umar and Abu Mawai of Pakistani origin.
Police said two AK 47 assault rifles were recovered from the militants' possesion.
Meanwhile, a caller identifying himself as spokesman of Al Mansoorian outfit Amir Mir claimed responsibility for the attack on the troops.
