Enraged at the denial of admit cards for intermediate science examinations, which got underway on Monday, hundreds of students went on a rampage at Madhepura College in Bihar indulging in arson and rioting.
Nearly 800 students, who were not issued admit cards by the Bihar State Intermediate Council, set ablaze the jeep of the college principal Ashok Kumar Yadav and a motorcycle parked on the campus forcing the staff to flee for safety.
They also damaged the furniture and made a bonfire of it before proceeding for the government-run T P College, where they hurled stones at the police.
There was, however, no report of injury to anybody, the sources said.
The situation was brought under control after district magistrate Rajesh Kumar and superintendent of police Anil Kishore Yadav assured the agitated students to look into the matter.
Sources said Madhepura College, though recognised by the Intermediate Council, is privately owned and the institution had enrolled students from districts like Bhagalpur, Katihar and even Dhanbad in neighbouring Jharkhand much in excess of its sanctioned strength.
The intermediate council issued admit-cards as per the sanctioned strength and denied it to about 800 students. Asked whether the examination will be cancelled, district magistrate Rajesh Kumar said he had informed the intermediate council about the incident and was awaiting its response.
