Nine farmers committed suicide in various parts of Maharashtra's poverty-hit Vidarbha region during the last 48 hours, a non governmental organisation said on Sunday.

Three of the farmers who committed suicide were from Buldana district, while two were from Chandrapur and one each from Yavatmal, Akola, Washim and Amravati, the NGO, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, said in a release in Nagpur.

With these nine deaths, 1,052 farmers have ended their lives after the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the region on July 1, 2006, the Samiti claimed.

The release said that Samiti president Kishore Tiwari in a letter faxed to the Prime Minister's Office has urged to make provisions during the forthcoming budget for time-bound action to stop farmers from committing suicide.

He has also demanded revision of Rural Credit Policy, complete waiver of loans to farmers and financial assistance for supplementary income generation schemes, the release added.
