The North-East Frontier Railway Authority hopes to repair both the damaged up and down tracks between Nijbari and Rangapani stations in West Bengal by Monday to restore normal train services in the section.
The tracks were damaged when the Down Brahmaputra Mail was derailed late on Sunday night, killing one person and injuring 66 others. A senior official at the Railway headquarter at Maligaon informed that the up line had already been repaired and train services resumed.
He added that the down track repair works were likely to be completed by Monday night to facilitate normal train running in the section.
Train services to the Northeast had been severely affected by the mishap.
The Railway official informed that 30 of the 66 injured victims have already been discharged while the rest were being treated in four hospitals including the Railway hospital in New Jalpaiguri.
The rest of the passengers on board the Brahmaputra Mail were ferried to Katihar station.
The NFR has ordered a probe into the mishap even as security agencies are probing the possibility of a sabotage which might have caused the mishap.
Railway sources pointed out that many more people would have been injured if the train had been running at a faster pace. The train was derailed approximately 20 minutes after it had left New Jalpaiguri junction and it was yet to pick up speed.
