A N Ghosh, who was extradited from Germany for allegedly defrauding nationalized banks of Rs 27.69 crore, was on Tuesday sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a court.

Indrajit Chatterjee, judge, first special court at Alipore, ordered his judicial custody till September 11 on a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) counsel T P Sinha.

Sinha submitted that the accused was a dangerous element and sought his judicial custody. The court refused to entertain the plea by a couple of lawyers, appearing impromptu on behalf of the accused, noting that they did not have the authorisation (vakalatnama) from Ghosh.

Amid reports that Ghosh had swallowed a knife three years ago while in Germany to prevent his extradition to India, Chatterjee directed the jail doctor to examine the accused and give a report to the court. The court would then consider whether Ghosh needed to be treated by a specialist doctor or not.
