Eight more killed in UP floods, toll hits 205

Floods claimed eight more lives in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, taking the flood-related death toll in the state to 205, said official sources.

Rampur, Pilibhit and Bahraich districts reported two deaths each, while two persons were killed in Ballia and Shahjahanpur respectively.

The water level of various rivers, including Ganga, Ghagra and Rapti, was rising alarmingly, according to reports.

In the state, Kalpi witnessed a maximum rainfall of 11.4 mm, while Kanpur recorded 2.6 mm rainfall, said reports. Villages located in eastern Uttar Pradesh have been worst hit by the floods.      

The Army has been called in to help in the flood-affected districts of Gorakhpur, Farukhabad and Barabanki. Personnel from the state's Provincial Armed Constabulary have also been assisting the civil administration in Shravasti, Gonda, Siddharth Nagar, Maharajganj and Baharaich.

The government has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods. The state government has so far spent approximately Rs 792 lakh in relief and rescue operations.
