The Left Parties on Monday appealed to the constituents of the United Progressive Alliance to understand the logic behind their decision to oppose the Indo-US nuclear deal.

In a joint statement by Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Prakash Karat, Communist Party of India General Secretary A B Bardhan, Revelutionary Socialist Party leader Abani Roy and All-India Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas, the Left said it was a stand taken which was in full support of parliamentary democracy. The statement was issued after 30-minute deliberations.

The Left Parties said, "We reiterate our stand taken on August 7. The majority in Parliament is against the deal. Hence the government should not proceed with the agreement."

The parties also made it clear that the only way out was to evaluate the implications of the Hyde Act.
