Assam police on Friday arrested three militants of the United Liberation Front of Assam and recovered a huge quantity of detonators from their possession.
The ULFA ultras were arrested from two different hideouts in the city in separate operations even as police and other security forces mounted surveillance in the state's capital city in the run up to the Independence Day.
Police claimed to have recovered 24 detonators from the possession of the ultras.
The police are on the look out for a 'few dumps of explosives' that have already been sneaked into the city by ULFA militants with intention to disrupt I-Day celebrations. A ban has been imposed on wearing olive green fatigue by civilians in Guwahati and other parts of the Kamrup district.
The olive green battle fatigue, which is meant for use by the Army and paramilitary force personnel, is often used by the banned insurgents in Assam and other northeastern states to befuddle security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations.
The police have asked all house owners in the capital city to submit details about their tenants to the nearest police station. A special form has been printed by the police to help house owners provide information about tenants living in their rented houses and premises in and around the city.
However, the response from house owners has been very lukewarm towards the police's bid to put all the temporary residents of the city under scan. The police initiated the process given that insurgents often take shelter in rented houses in the populous city where it is impossible for the police to keep a tab on people living in every household.
A large number of militants belonging to different insurgents groups of the northeast were either killed or apprehended by police in rented houses in the city in recent times. Besides the banned ULFA, insurgents from Manipur often take shelter in the city to dodge security forces back home.
