On Sunday at a conference of chief ministers and chief justices of high courts, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan that the judiciary should not breach the thin line between itself and the legislature.

Balakrishnan retorted by asserting upon the judiciary's independence, particularly its power to review the actions of Parliament and legislatures.

Joining the debate on the role of judiciary vis-a-vis legislature, former Reserve Bank of India governor and member of the Rajya Sabha Bimal Jalan today strongly backed the courts reviewing the Constitutional validity of legislative decisions.

Jalan in his book India's Politics - A view from the backbench said the people should have the right to appeal on an executive order.

The debate on legislature vs judiciary just gets hotter.

Who do you think is superior -- the legislature or the judiciary? Tell us your views.
