On the first day of the holy month of Ramadan militants attacked a local police Jeep killing one lady constable and wounding five others.

Police in Srinagar said militants tossed a grenade inside a police Jeep in the busy Maharaja Bazaar locality of the city uptown Monday afternoon.

"The grenade exploded inside the vehicle injuring all the four occupants. One of the injured identified as lady constable Gulshana Bano died en route to the SMHS hospital while three other cops and two civilians bystanders wounded in this attack are now being treated at the same hospital," said a senior police officer in Srinagar.

The attack has jolted speculations and the appeal for a unilateral ceasefire to the militants made by state Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who has been strongly advocating cessation of hostilities by the militants during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Azad also said the government would positively reciprocate to the ceasefire if announced by the militants to coincide with the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
