With the ceasefire with United Liberation Front of Asom in Assam expiring at midnight on Wednesday, a high level meeting in New Delhi on Thursday reviewed the peace process with the banned group.
The meeting, chaired by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, was attended by Home Sercretary V K Duggal among others, sources in the security establishment said.
Since no decision was arrived at in the meeting held in the Prime Minister's Office, another meeting is likely to take place on Friday.
Sources said the army is strongly opposed to any further suspension of operations against ULFA in view of reports that the group was using the lull to regroup and carry out an extortion drive.
However, the sources said there was a possibility that the ceasefire would be extended further despite ULFA's failure to give a written commitment on holding direct talks with the Centre.
