The Assam unit of the Communist Party of India has advocated a political negotiation with the United Liberation Front of Asom militants, on the lines of the round table talks that the prime minister is holding with the militants in Jammu and Kashmir.
The CPI said the central government should allow recognised political parties to have a role in the ongoing peace initiative to bring the banned ULFA to the negotiation table.
The party's national executive committee member from the state, Promode Gogoi, has said that the central government should take political parties into confidence and convene a meeting to find a way out of the present stalemate.
He pointed out that the central government was keeping the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir abreast of developments in the talks with militant leaders.
"The Government of India convened a meeting of political parties during the Assam agitation against illegal migrants during 1979-85, to find a solution to the problem. However, in case of the banned ULFA the central government so far hasn't shown any interest to discuss the issue with the political parties of the state."
Assam state executive of the CPI, in a recent meeting, passed a resolution appealing to the central government and the ULFA leaders to overcome all obstacles to initiate direct talks as per the wishes of the common people.
The CPI leader stated that there were vested interests within the security forces and the political parties who were out to stymie the peace process.
"The people of Assam should keep vigil against such forces," he said.
