India's Ambassador to Nepal Shiv Shankar Mukherjee will meet Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi on Tuesday and is likely to apprise him of the current situation in the Himalayan kingdom.

Though the agenda of the meeting is not known, the talks come in the background of parleys between the Maoist rebels and the ruling Seven-Party Alliance in Nepal.

The Maoist leadership has objection to Nepal signing an extradition treaty with India and reportedly pressurised Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to cancel Nepal Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situola's visit to New Delhi early in September pending the talks between the Maoists and the government.

Sitoula was to have signed a new treaty replacing the 50-year old obsolete pact and inked a mutual legal assistance agreement aimed at facilitating the legal aspects of implementing the extradition treaty.

Meanwhile, the talks between the Maoist rebels and the Nepal government have been indefinitely put off as the two sides failed to reach any agreement on key issues, including arms management.
