Unidentified militants on Tuesday evening attacked and critically wounded Dr Shamim Badru, widow of slain Hizbul Mujahideen top commander Abdul Majid Dar, in the Chanpora locality of Srinagar.
Police said Dr Badru was removed to SMHS hospital in Srinagar after the militants fired at her from close range as she was returning home after duty hours.
Her condition is stated to be critical and a team of doctors is presently operating on her to save her life.
Dar shot into prominence in July 2000 when he announced a unilateral ceasefire by his group and initiated talks with senior home ministry officials.
The ceasefire was withdrawn by Muzaffarabad-based Hizbul Mujahideen supreme commander Syed Salahuddin in August 2000.
Dar was gunned down by unidentified assailants in March 2003 at his ancestral home in north Kashmir Sopore town.
