The prime accused in the multi-crore fake stamp-paper case Abdul Karim Telgi on Friday sought protection for his daughter from four co-accused held with him in jail, who, he claimed, may kidnap her.
During the hearing through video-conferencing between Yerawada Central Jail and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act Court of Special Judge Chitra Bhedi, Telgi said Sirajuddin Nasipude and three other co-accused had conspired to kidnap his daughter to extort money from him.
Telgi said he came to know of the conspiracy to kidnap Sana Telgi, a final year engineering student in a Bangalore college, on October 18.
Following this, he handed over a diary with notations the four had made about the plan to his lawyer Milind Pawar.
Demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the conspiracy, Telgi said he had instructed Pawar to file a complaint in the court.
On being asked about it, Pawar said he would file the complaint on Monday after another meeting with Telgi.
Except for Telgi's wife Shahida, all other accused, including those free on bail like former Mumbai police chief R S Sharma and senior police officials Pradeep Sawant and M C Mulani, were produced before the court on Friday.
While adjourning the hearing to November 18, the court extended till then the judicial custody of all the accused who are in jail.
Of the 67 accused chargesheeted by CBI in July 2005, five have been freed on bail, one is absconding and another died in Yerawada Central Jail in February 2005.
The Special Court had on October 10 decided to consider on Friday the charges against the 60-odd accused.
However, Rasheed Kulkarni, an accused and former lawyer of Telgi, objected to the initiation of the process, saying the prosecution had not informed the court about the closure of the investigation.
It was also revealed before the court that as many as 40 accused did not have a lawyer to represent them.
Judge Bhedi directed the accused that they should appoint a lawyer by the next hearing.
