UP mayoral polls: SP routed

The ruling Samajwadi Party suffered a major setback in mayoral polls in Uttar Pradesh as it secured just one of 12 posts in municipal corporations while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party won eight.

Even the Congress showed better performance than the ruling party by winning three mayoral seats.

SP secured its lone victory in Moradabad where its candidate S T Hasan scraped past his nearest rival by a mere 1,710 votes.

BJP candidate Damayanti Goyal defeated her SP rival by over 28,000 votes in Ghaziabad while in Aligarh its candidate Ashutosh Varshneya beat the SP candidate by 20,000 votes.

SP faced defeat in Varanasi where the BJP's Kaushalendra Singh secured victory by over 30,000 votes while Anjula Mahaur of BJP got the better of SP in Agra too by over 26,000 votes.

The BJP's Anju Chaudhary won in Gorakhpur by over 53,000 votes while in Meerut the party's candidate Madhu Gujjar won by over 1,00,000 votes.

In Lucknow, BJP's Dinesh Sharma defeated his nearest rival by a margin of over 9,000 votes and in Kanpur party's nominee Ravindra Patni defeated his nearest Congress rival by over 45,000 votes.

Congress candidate and scribe-turned-politician Supriya Aron recorded a thumping victory at Bareilly defeating her nearest rival by 66,000 votes, officials said adding, that Congress candidate Jitendra Singh bagged the Allahabad seat by a margin of 4,000 votes whereas in Jhansi the party candidate Dr V B Lal defeated his nearest SP rival by over 30,000 votes.
