Six policemen were injured as a group of Dalits allegedly indulged in arson and violence in Kamptee near Nagpur, prompting police to clamp indefinite curfew on Tuesday.

Police said a group of Dalits was protesting against the killing of four members of a Dalit family in Khairlanji (Bhandara district) allegedly by non-Dalits two months ago over a property dispute.

They pelted stones at the police party, attacked Kamptee police station, damaged vehicles and set them on fire shortly after mid-night.

Police lathicharged them, lobbed teargas shells and fired shots to disperse the mob.

Six policemen, including three officers, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kamptee Civil Hospital and MEO Hospital in Nagpur. About six police vehicles were also damaged, they added.

About 22 youngsters were arrested in this connection, police said adding, curfew has been clamped in the area.

Meanwhile, about 200 people blocked roads by burning tyres at Hinghana T-point, on the outskirts of Nagpur on Tuesday morning, police said.

In Indora area, which witnessed violence on Monday over the same issue, the situation was tense but under control, police said.
