Rahul Mahajan, son of late Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan, made a surprise appearance at the venue of the party's national executive meeting in New Delhi on Monday.
The party's national executive is being held for the first time after Mahajan's death earlier this month.
Asked about his presence at the venue, Rahul said BJP president Rajnath Singh had invited him for lunch.
He, however, parried questions on speculation about his assuming any position in the party. To a question whether there was any offer from Rajnath Singh in this regard, he said, "The party president will answer this question. I will do whatever the party president asks me to do."
The two-day national executive began with Rajnath Singh and other leaders paying homage to Mahajan.
Asked if he would play an active role in fulfilling his father's dreams, an emotional Rahul replied, "Whatever a son can do to fulfill his father's dreams, I will do." However, he hastened to add that politics was not the only dream of his father.
The two-day BJP national executive unanimously adopted a resolution recalling Mahajan's contributions to the party over the years.
Rahul's presence at the meeting assumes significance as it came close on the heels of Rajnath's efforts to get him or his mother Rekha, a Rajya Sabha nomination from Maharashtra in place of Pramod Mahajan. However, the efforts proved futile as the Congress turned down the proposal despite support from Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar.
Rahul later left for Assam carrying with him the urn containing the ashes of his father.
