Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday toured areas of the city that have witnessed widespread violence since Monday that left six persons dead and over 60 injured.
Modi, who has warned of strict action against those indulging in rioting, also attended a high-level meeting with Director General of Police P C Pande and senior officials to assess the situation and chalk out an action plan to contain the disturbances.
The chief minister also met victims of the violence at SSG Hospital.
Earlier, Modi had issued a statement that warned of action against those indulging in violence. He also appealed to the people to maintain peace.
"Some people with vested interests are unhappy with the manner in which the state was progressing and maintaining peace. These people do not like the path of development that Gujarat is on," he said in the statement.
The law enforcement agencies would take necessary steps to restore peace and normalcy at the earliest, he said.
The violence in Vadodara was sparked by the demolition of a more than 200-year-old dargah by civic authorities on Monday.
